Pet Doors - Support

Follow the steps below to find the right door for your dog or cat. Have multiple pets who will use the door? Choose a door sized for your largest pet.

You can find the dimensions for your door in your product manual and on product pages for individual doors in our online store.

Always use the Pet Door cutting template included in the package before cutting an opening in your door or wall. Radio Systems Corporation shall not be liable for any personal injuries or property damage as a result of not using the proper Pet Door template when installing a Pet Door.

Your pet door has two major parts: the frame and the flap. The inner and outer parts of the frame fit together in the cutout to hold the flap in place. The flap is the part that covers the cut-out hole in the door, the part your pet goes through to use the door.

Please note that all measurements are approximate and prone to user error, so don't worry if you measure your door and your measurements aren't exactly the same as the dimensions given online or in your manual. Your door's dimensions will also change over time; doors expand and contract, and flaps may shrink or warp.

Outer Frame: The outer measurements of the door's frame.

Flap Opening: The measurement of the part of the door your pet goes through. This is not the measurement of the flap itself, but the space your pet has to go into. This is measured using the interior door frame.

Flap Size: The overall measurements of the door flap.

Cut-Out Size: The hole you cut in your door to install the door. After installation, you can get this measurement again by taking the pet door out.

Replacement flaps can be purchased through our Customer Care Centre. To ensure we send you the proper flap we will need to ask some questions about your door. Please be near the door so that you can respond to these questions and call our Customer Care Centre.

It can be difficult to find a pet door that will match your old one exactly. First, you'll need to measure the cutout hole in your door. Note that this is the cutout in the door, not the pet door frame. Next, pick a door that is closest in measurement. 

You might need to cut the hole in your door a little bigger to accommodate a slightly larger new door. To replace it with a slightly smaller door instead, add additional pieces of wood to the inside of the hole.

If your door has a fixing nut, loosen the fixing nut and adjust the flap to the desired size. Please call our Customer Care Centre to verify the correct flap for your door.

Your Microchip Petporte smart flap® will only work if your cat has been fitted with a microchip or you have a collar key.

At present, some older and non-standard microchips may not work with this cat flap. You can check to see if your cat’s embedded microchip will work by entering the microchip number in the box below and clicking the “check” button.

You will find your cat’s microchip number on your microchip registration form from your vet.

Please note that chips with 10 digits, lettered characters, and those starting with 977xxxxxxxxxxxx and 98514xxxxxxxxxx are not currently compatible with the cat flap.

Check Compatibility

It can be very concerning to find a lost pet and most of us want to find the owner as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, at this time, there is not a way to match the collar with the owner. Please contact your local authorities to understand what services are available in your area to help locate the owner.

To set the timer, you need to set the unlock time and the lock time at the time when you want the door to lock and unlock. For example, if you want the door to unlock at 7:00, program the unlock time when it’s 7:00. If you want the door to lock at 20:00, program the lock time at 20:00.

To set the open/unlock time

1. Press the red and green button at the same time for 2 seconds. Both lights will flash and the door will beep.
2. Select extended mode 7 by pressing the red button 7 times. The unit will beep each time you press the button. Wait until you hear the beep to press the button again each time.
3. Press the red and green button at the same time. The green light will be on and the red one will be flashing.
4. Press and release the green button.

To set the close/lock time

1. Press the red and green button at the same time for 2 seconds. Both lights will flash and the door will beep.
2. Select extended mode 7 by pressing the red button 7 times. The unit will beep each time you press the button. Wait until you hear the beep to press the button again each time.
3. Press the red and green button at the same time. The green light will be on and the red one will be flashing.
4. Press and release the red button.

Now set the unit into night mode by pressing and releasing the red button. The red light will stay on. The unit will now lock and unlock at the set times of days. Note the following about the timer.

• The resolution of the timer is 10 minutes.
• The timer will not work in battery mode. The timer will only work when the door is plugged in.
• If you get a power cut, then you will need to reset the times again.
• The timer mode takes over from the light level detector (i.e. it will no longer read the ambient light levels to decide if the unit should be locked or not)

1. Select extended mode 9.
2. Press and hold both buttons until the lights flash. The unit will emit a long beep.
3. Press the red button 8 times. The unit will beep each time you press the button. Wait until you hear the beep to press the button again each time.
4. Press both buttons together. The cat flap is now in test mode. The red light will flash when it detects a microchip, and the green light will flash when it recognises your cat's microchip.
5. Remove the 4 screws on the front cover of the door, then remove the front cover.
6. Have another person hold the cat outside under the scanner as if the cat is trying to get in.
7. Find the black screw on the electronics board of the door. You may want to mark the position where the screw started. Adjust the black screw on the electronics board, turning it a millimeter at a time one way and then the other, until the green light flashes the most.
8. You’ve successfully increased the range. You can bring your cat inside. To remove the cat flap from the test mode, unplug the door and remove the battery if being used. Press the red button for 1 second, then plug the power back into the cat flap.

• Is the scanner wire connected properly?
• Is the cable plugged inside the unit correctly?

  

• If you are using an extension lead, has the extension come loose at the connection?

If the cables are all plugged in correctly, there may have been a power surge. To power down and then reset the door:

1. Unplug the power.
2. Take out the battery.
3. Press and hold the red button for 10-15 seconds. This will clear the circuit board.
4. Plug the unit back in.
5. Press and hold the green button for 30 seconds to restore the door to default settings.
6. Put the battery back in. The door should now power on.

• Make sure your cat’s chip is compatible with the Petporte. Use chip checker tool.
• If your cat has a Bio Therm (temperature reading) chip, this is not compatible. These chips can sometimes stop working. Some examples of Bio Therm numbers include 985 140 000123456 and 985 141 000123456.
• Your cat’s chip may be faulty. Virbec chips had a faulty batch in February 2012 with the prefix 90008800 - 90008800259208. These might come up as compatible on the chip checker, but if it is from the faulty batch, it will not work with the Petporte. You will need to get a new microchip for your cat.
• The chip may have migrated to a different place in your cat’s body. It is normal for some microchips to move from the original position, between the cat’s shoulder blades, to another place inside your cat, possibly to the left or right side of your cat’s shoulders. This will not harm your cat. To tell if the chip has migrated, gently hold your cat near the door. Move different parts of your cat up to the door, starting near the your cat’s shoulders. If you have determined that the chip has moved, you have 2 options.
  1. Adjust the read range to the side where your cat’s microchip is. For example, if the chip has moved to your cat’s left side, set the microchip scanner to read your cat’s left side.
  2. If you have more than one cat, the above method will change the scanner side for all cats. For multi-cat homes, adjust the read range as follows. You will need someone to help you with this step.

The door will only run on battery power if it is unplugged.

The battery is meant to be a backup in case there is a power outage. Some functions will not work on battery-only mode, including night mode. In battery-only mode, the door goes to sleep to conserve battery life. It is not constantly scanning for your cat’s microchip, so your cat will need to tip the door to wake up the door and allow it to open.

The green lock may be out of place or the spring connecting to the green lock may have been dislodged from the plastic teeth by a cat trying to force his way in. To check the lock and spring:

• Remove the 4 cap covers and screws in each corner of the inside of your flap.
• Check the green lock. The green lock is in the bottom left corner. Make sure the lock is in place.
• Check the spring, a very fine piece of fuse wire. The spring is above 2 small teeth on the bottom of the green toggle. The spring is held into place by screw with a green washer on the right hand side of the main green lock. Make sure the spring is in place.
• Check the green toggle and ball joint. The green toggle is the beak-shaped green piece that moves to allow the cat to enter after being scanned. The ball joint comes out of the top of the green toggle.

If the spring or lock is not out of place, follow these steps to reset the door.

1. Unplug the power.
2. Take out the battery. 
3. Press and hold the red button for 10-15 seconds. This will clear the circuit board.
4. Plug the unit back in.
5. Press and hold the green button for 30 seconds to restore the door to default settings.
6. Put the battery back in. The door should now power on.

Unfortunately, there are some very clever cats that can get their claws under the door and pull the door towards them and then climb in under the door.

• Put a piece of cardboard over the see-through flap. Strays often won’t recognise this as a place to enter.
• Keep food or water away from the Petporte. Food especially will encourage strays to come to the flap.

When your cat comes in, he has to lower his head to enter the flap. This allows the magnet to rest on the tunnel , which activates the see saw inside the cat flap, which in turn allows the door to pass over the latch.

When testing the unit, touch the magnet to the outside edge of the tunnel. You should notice the magnet
being attracted to the central part. Push on the door and it should open. When you remove the magnet and push on the door, it should not open. Note that the latch does not drop down when the magnet goes onto the tunnel; the see saw drops and allows the flap to slide over the latch.

Programme a key

1. Install 4 AA batteries into the cat flap.
2. Install batteries in the key.
3. To the left of the circuit board on the flap, there are two buttons, ‘Manual’ and a ‘Learn’ button. Press the ‘Learn’ button and hold the key up to the door. The LED light on the cat flap should start to flash green. The key is now programmed. 
4. Repeat the steps above to programme more than one collar key.

Delete a collar key

Press the ‘Manual ‘ and the ‘Learn’ button together for a couple of seconds. These buttons are located to the left of the circuit board on the flap. This will wipe out the previous memory.

The key activates from up to 20 centimeters away from the flap. While your cat is in this range, the latch will stay down to open the door, and when your cat is out of range, the latch will go into the up position and lock the cat flap.

You’ll need to power down and reset the circuit board.

1. Take the batteries out for at least 30 minutes. This will clear the circuit board memory.
2. Put the batteries back in. The red LED light should flash.
3. Hold the key up to the flap. The cat flap will then make a high pitched beep, which means the key has been programmed in.
4. When you hold the key up to the cat flap again, the latch should drop down and you should be able to push on the flap to open it. When you take the key away, the door should lock.

1. From the inside of the house, remove the security barrier if in use.
2. From the outside of the house, lift up the U-shape plastic to reveal the four screw heads. 
3. Using a cross-head screwdriver, remove the screws from the outside and the nuts on the inside. The internal and external frames should now come away from the door.
4. Firmly but carefully remove the flap and U-shape assembly from the external frame.
5. Remove the flap from the U-shape by taking the flap hinges out of the u-shape bearings. 
6. Replace the new flap into the U-shape, ensuring that the word Staywell or PetSafe reads from left to right.
7. Re-position the flap and the U-shape assembly in the external frame. 
8. Align the internal and external frames back on the door and replace the four screws and nuts. Replace security barrier if appropriate.

1. Unscrew the two screws on the outside of the unit. 
2. Take off the inside section and unscrew the two smaller screws above the door flap. 
3. Unclip the inside cover. The clips are on the underside of the unit. 
4. Unclip the plastic clips on the underside of the unit.
5. You can then see inside the unit and put in the springs. If the spring is missing or damaged, contact the Customer Care Centre.

When considering a pet patio panel, you first need to determine the kind of sliding glass door you have. You can easily install a patio pet panel door into both exposed and recessed doors. An exposed sliding glass door frame is visible and exposed in the interior and exterior wall. You can see the track the door slides into. A recessed frame is flush with or barely visible in the interior or exterior wall. You can't see the track the door slides into. If you have a recessed door, you will need a Patio Panel Kit (not included) to install your pet door. Contact the Customer Care Centre to purchase a Patio Panel Kit for Recessed Doors.

Worn on your pet’s collar, the Passport™ Key uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology by using a unique code to signal the Passport™ Intelligent Cat Flap or Passport™ Intelligent Dog Door to operate as programmed for your pet. The Passport™ Key does not require a battery to operate. One Passport™ Key is included, which you can program to operate with your door. The Passport™ Pet Doors can be programmed for up to 20 pets with additional Passport™ Key accessories (sold separately).

Checklist before Installing

• You’ve installed the clock battery.
• The power adaptor or battery is ready to be used.
• If you’re using the power adaptor, you have located a power outlet or cord extension near the planned location inside your home to plug in the power adaptor.
• You’ve checked the planned location for the door for possible radio-frequency interference by ensuring all common household appliances and electronic devices are at least 60 cm away.
• You’ve disconnected the power adaptor and motion sensor wire if you’re using the adaptor, or you’ve removed the battery if you’re using the optional Passport™ Rechargeable Battery.
• You’ve completed the Initial User Setup steps to set the language, time and date.
• You’ve programmed the Passport™ Pet Door and Passport™ Key or microchip for each pet who will use the pet door.
• You’ve tested each Passport™ Key or microchip in the installation location on both the interior and exterior side and made sure the pet door can read each key or microchip.
• You’ve set the Passport™ Pet Door to Open Mode.
• There are no obstructions to the pet door including doors opening and closing, shrubs or household objects.
• If your door or wall is more than 5 cm thick, you have a Passport™ Wall Entry Kit.
• You have checked for electrical and plumbing fixtures in the wall where you plan to install the Passport™ Pet Door.
• You have the help of a friend or family member for installation (optional but recommended).

Step 1: Assemble the Tunnels

1. If you have the Small Wall Entry Kit, go to the next step. For the Medium Wall Entry Tunnel Kit, assemble the 2 interior tunnel side panels together by aligning the arrows and snapping the panels together. Repeat with the remaining side panels. These are the sides of the interior tunnel frame.
2. Assemble 1 tunnel side on each side of an interior top/ bottom. Align the arrows and snap the panels together to create the bottom and sides of the interior tunnel frame.
3. Assemble the 2nd interior top/bottom on top by aligning the arrows and snapping the panels together to complete the interior tunnel frame.
4. If you have the Small Wall Entry Kit, go to the next step. For the Medium Wall Entry Tunnel Kit, assemble the 2 exterior tunnel side panels together by aligning the arrows and snapping the panels together. Repeat with the remaining side panels. These are the sides of the exterior tunnel frame.
5. Assemble 1 tunnel side (component C) onto each side of an exterior top/bottom (component D). Align the arrows and snap the panels together to create the bottom and sides of the exterior tunnel frame.
6. Assemble the 2nd exterior top/bottom (component D) on top by aligning the arrows and snapping the panels together. This completes the assembly of the exterior tunnel frame.

Step 2: Determine the Pet Door Location

1. Disconnect the power adaptor or remove the optional rechargeable battery.
2. Disconnect the motion sensor wire from the exterior frame.
3. Locate the wall studs in the area where you will install the pet door.
4. Locate the centre between the studs.
5. Using a pencil, draw a level vertical line on the wall through the centre.
6. Measure and mark your pet’s belly height on the interior side of the wall.
7. Draw a level vertical line at your pet’s belly height lightly with a pencil or on a piece of tape so the marks can easily be erased or removed.

Step 3: Prepare the Wall

1. Match the marked lines on the door with the belly height and centre lines on the template. Tape the template in place and carefully trace the template lines. Make sure to trace under the tape and connect the corners. Carefully remove the template and any excess tape to reuse for the exterior wall cut-out.
2. Repeat the previous step on the exterior side of the wall.
3. Review the cut-out location on both the interior and exterior to make sure it’s the best possible location for the pet door.

Step 4: Cut the Pet Door Opening

1. Make sure there is nothing on the other side of the wall where you will be drilling the holes or cutting the opening.
2. Drill 13 mm holes in the inside corners and top angle of drawn template on interior wall. Use both hands to hold the drill steady and straight at a 90 degree angle to the wall.
3. Beginning in one of the holes you just drilled, carefully cut along drawn template lines using an appropriate cutting device.
   • Use a proper cutting device and blade length and type according to the wall thickness and material. For example, use a wood blade for a wooden wall and a metal blade for a metal wall.
   • If you’re using a jigsaw or other tool with a blade, before you start cutting, apply painter or masking tape on the blade guide and along the outer edges of the drawn template to help protect the wall surface from marks and scratches during cutting.
   • Be careful not to drill through the exterior wall.
   • Cut slowly using both hands to hold the cutting tool steady and straight at a 90° angle. This will prevent the blade from cutting unevenly between the interior and exterior sides of the wall.
   • From the interior side, remove any insulation or debris to expose the exterior wall.
   • Ask a professional to adjust or reroute plumbing or other utilities if your door cut-out will interfere with access to the exterior wall.
4. Check the frame fit in the cut-out.
   • Slide the interior tunnel frame into the exterior tunnel frame.
   • Place the assembled tunnel frames into the cut-out with the interior frame facing the interior side.
   • Align the arrow inside the tunnel top and bottom or centre rib on the outside of the tunnel with the drawn centre line on the wall.
   • The width of the cut-out should be wider than the tunnel frame to allow room for the installation hardware, which will be installed in a later step.
   • The height should allow the tunnel frame to move freely. If the cut-out is too small, remove the tunnel frame and make the hole slightly bigger for the tunnel to fit freely.
5. Assemble the centre locator template with the arrows on the outside. Insert the tabs in the open slots.
6. With the arrows pointed up, place the assembled centre locator into the assembled tunnel frames so they’re flush with the bottom and exterior side of frames.
7. Place the tunnel frames with the centre locator in the cut-out. Push the frames flush against the exterior wall. Centre the assembled tunnel in the cut-out by aligning the arrows inside the tunnel frames or the centre rib on the outside of the tunnel with the drawn centre line on the wall.
8. Using a 13 mm drill bit, drill through the 3 holes in the centre locator template through the exterior wall. Remove the tunnel frames with the centre locator. Using the centre locator as a guide, hold the drill steady and straight at a 90 degree angle.
9. Move to the exterior side. Align the 3 holes on the cutting template with the 3 holes you just drilled. Tape the template to the exterior wall. Check to ensure the template is square and realign it if needed. Using a pencil, carefully trace the template on the wall. Remove the template.
10. Drill 13 mm holes in the inside corners and top angle of the drawn template on the exterior wall. Use both hands to hold the drill steady and straight at a 90 degree angle.
11. Starting in one of the holes you just drilled, carefully cut along the drawn template line using a jigsaw or a different cutting device.
    • Cut slowly using both hands to hold the cutting tool steady and straight at a 90° angle. This will prevent the blade from cutting unevenly between the interior and exterior sides of the wall.
    • Use a proper cutting device and blade length and type according to the wall thickness and material. For example, use a wood blade for a wooden wall and a metal blade for a metal wall.
    • If you’re using a jigsaw or other tool with a blade, before you start cutting, apply painter or masking tape on the blade guide and along the outer edges of the drawn template to help protect the wall surface from marks and scratches during cutting.
    • If you’re cutting through vinyl siding, carefully score and cut the siding before cutting through the plywood.
12. Check the fit of the frames in the exterior cut-out.
    • Place the assembled tunnel frames into the cut-out with the exterior frame facing outside.
    • The width of the cut-out should be wider than the tunnel frame to allow room for the installation hardware, which will be installed in a later step.
    • The height should allow the tunnel frame to move freely with no tight areas. If the cut-out is too small, remove the tunnel frame and make the hole slightly bigger for the tunnel to fit freely.

Step 5: Install the Pet Door

1. You can give your door extra support by following these optional installation steps.
   • Measure from the inside of the exterior wall to the inside of the interior wall. Cut a board to the measured length, making sure the cut is square. Remove any debris inside the wall where the support beam will be installed. Make sure the support beam fits snugly and is not too long or too short to prevent damage to the wall.
   • Place the support beam inside the wall so the top of the beam is flush with the bottom of the interior and exterior cut-outs. Use 2 drywall or wood screws (not included) to fasten the support beam to the interior wall. If you’re installing screws into vinyl siding, you might need to drill a hole slightly larger than the screw head so the screw tightens flush and does not buckle the vinyl siding.
   • Use 2 drywall or wood screws (not included) to fasten the support to the exterior wall.
2. Measure the cut-out from the outside of the exterior wall to the outside of the interior wall. Write down the measurements.
3. Screw a binder post onto the screw rod end without the nut. Use the binder post as a guide and cut the screw rod to a length of your previous measurement + 51 mm. After the cut, remove the binder post to help straighten the threads. Repeat with each screw rod.
   • After cutting the screw rods, ensure the threads are smooth.
   • If there are burrs, use sandpaper or a file to remove the burrs so the screw binders screw easily over the threads.
4. Using a 6 mm drill bit, drill through the 4 outer screw holes from the front side of the interior frame, including the ones inside the battery compartment. Turn the frame over and drill through the back side of the same screw holes on the interior frame.
5. Before installing the interior tunnel frame onto the interior door frame, you need to determine which tunnel position is needed for your wall thickness. Use the chart below to determine this. Place the interior tunnel frame (A-B) onto the interior pet door frame (frame with flap) with tabs in the tunnel position listed in the chart for your wall thickness.

6. Using a 5 mm drill bit, drill through the side holes located inside the interior tunnel frame through the interior pet door frame.
   • Small doors have 2 holes and Medium doors have 4 holes.
   • From the inside of the tunnel, push to insert a tunnel fastener into each hole you just drilled until the fastener head is flush with the tunnel side.
   • Trim off any excess tunnel fastener using side-cutting pliers.
7. If you aren’t using the exterior tunnel frame, skip the next 2 steps. If your wall is thicker than 149 mm, place the exterior tunnel frame (C-D) on the exterior pet door frame with the tabs in the tunnel position listed in the chart for your wall thickness.
8. Using a 5 mm drill bit, drill through the side holes located inside the exterior tunnel frame through the exterior pet door frame. From inside the tunnel, push to insert a tunnel fastener into each hole you just drilled until the fastener head is flush with the tunnel side. Small doors have 2 holes and medium doors have 4 holes.
9. Apply duct tape along the top edge of the interior and exterior cut-out. Leave approximately 5 cm uncovered on either side of the tape and make sure no excess tape will show outside the pet door frame. This is to cover the raw edge of the cut-out to keep it from pinching or cutting the motion sensor wire. With the motion sensor wire on top of the tunnel, place the interior pet door frame in the interior side of the cut-out. If you’re working alone, tape the interior frame in place while installing the exterior frame and installation hardware.
10. From the exterior side of the cut-out, plug the motion sensor wire into the connector on the exterior frame. You might need to loosen the exterior frame to reach the pin to put the wire on. Without pinching the wire, guide any excess wire into the space between the top edge of the wall cut-out and the tunnel on the exterior frame. Align the exterior frame in the cut-out. Check both sides to ensure the exterior and interior telescoping tunnels are aligned.
11. Put the screw rods with hex nut completely through the 4 outer screw holes on the exterior frame until the hex nut is flush within the screw hole. Tape the interior frame tunnel to the exterior frame inside the flap opening to help hold the frames together while inserting the screw rods.
12. Put the binder posts in the 4 outer screw holes on the interior frame and align them with the screw rods. Be sure to insert binder post in the screw hole(s) inside the battery compartment. Reach through the flap opening to push the hex nut end of the screw rod. While pushing the hex nut, use a screw driver to tighten the binder posts.
    • Pull the interior frame slightly away from the cut-out to view the screw rods and binder posts to help align.
    • Use a manual screwdriver to tighten the binder posts. Do not over-tighten the screws or you might strip the installation hardware or warp the pet door frame and prevent it from working properly.
13. Put the finishing plugs in the screw holes on interior and exterior frames. Align the flat edge of the plugs with the outer edges of the frame. The plugs will only fit one direction.
14. Plug the power adaptor into the connector underneath the interior frame.
15. You can route the power adaptor wire through the wire guides in the desired direction towards the nearest power outlet. This step is optional because the wire may be too thin to fit easily in the wire guides.
16. You can apply caulk, a silicone adhesive, around the exterior frame and in between the tunnels, where the tunnels meet, for improved weather resistance. This is optional.

Checklist before Installation

Before cutting any holes or installing your pet door, make sure that:

• You’ve installed the clock battery.
• The power adaptor or battery is ready to be used.
• If you’re using the power adaptor, you have located a power outlet or cord extension near the planned location inside your home to plug in the power adaptor.
• You’ve checked the planned location for the pet door for possible radio-frequency interference by ensuring all common household appliances and electronic devices are at least 60 cm away.

Installation Step 1: Determine the Pet Door Location

1. Follow these steps for installing in a door not made of glass.
2. Disconnect the power adaptor or remove the optional rechargeable battery.
3. Disconnect the motion sensor wire from the exterior frame.
4. Measure and mark your pet’s belly height on the interior side of the door.
5. Draw a level vertical line at your pet’s belly height lightly with a pencil or on a piece of tape so the marks can easily be erased or removed.

Installation Step 2: Prepare the Door

1. Match the marked lines on the door with the belly height and centre lines on the template.
2. Tape the template in place and carefully trace the template lines. Make sure to trace under the tape and connect the corners. Remove the template and any excess tape from the door.

Installation Step 3: Cut the Pet Door Opening

1. Make sure there is nothing on the other side of the door where you will be drilling the holes or cutting the opening.
2. Before cutting the pet door opening, apply painter or masking tape on the jigsaw blade guide and along the outer edges of the drawn template to help protect the door surface from marks and scratches during cutting.
3. Drill 13 mm holes in the inside corners and the centre of the top angle of the drawn template.
4. Beginning in one of the holes you just drilled, cut along the drawn template lines.
5. Cut slowly using both hands to hold the saw steady and straight at a 90° angle. This will prevent the blade from cutting unevenly between the interior and exterior sides of the door.
6. Use a proper saw blade length and type according to the door thickness and material. For example, use a wood blade for a wood door and a metal blade for a metal door.
7. After cutting out the opening, you may need to recut it to square the opening. This is necessary for the pet door frame to fit correctly.

Installation Step 4: Install the Pet Door

1. Before putting away your jigsaw, place the interior frame with flaps inside the cut-out and check the fit. Then place the exterior frame in the underside of the cut-out to check the fit. If the frames don’t easily fit inside the opening, recut the opening before continuing. This will be much easier if you have someone to help you check both sides.
2. Measure the thickest part of the cut-out. Write down this measurement.
3. Before installing the pet door, you need to determine which screw length is needed for your installation. Depending on your door thickness, the screws may need to be trimmed with a hacksaw or screw cutter. If the screws are too long, the finishing plugs will not fit. Use the Screw Selection Guide below to select which screw to use and decide if it needs to be trimmed.

4. Remove any pencil marks and make sure the surface is free of debris and shavings before installing the frames.
5. Apply duct tape along the top interior and exterior edge of the cut-out. Leave about 5 cm uncovered on either side of the tape and make sure no excess tape will show outside the frame. This is to cover the raw edge of the cut-out to keep it from pinching or cutting the motion sensor wire.
6. Place the interior frame in the cut-out from the interior side of the door, guiding the motion sensor wire to the exterior.
7. Take the exterior frame and plug the motion sensor wire from the interior frame into the connector of the exterior frame.
8. Place the exterior frame in the cut-out from the exterior side of the door.
9. Align the exterior frame flush with the bottom of the cut-out. This will be much easier if you have someone to hold the exterior frame in place while you install the interior frame.
10. Without pinching the wire, guide the excess wire into the space between the top edge of the door cut-out and the tunnel on the exterior frame. Align the interior frame in the cut-out and exterior telescoping tunnel.
11. Check both sides of the pet door to ensure the exterior and interior telescoping tunnels are aligned. You should be able to see clearly through all screw holes when your pet door is aligned properly.

Installation Step 5: Insert the Screws and Plugs

1. Insert mounting screws through the interior frame screw holes, including the ones in the battery compartment. Check to make sure the pet door fit is correct and the frame is aligned flush. Small pet doors have 4 screw holes and medium pet doors have 6 screw holes.
2. Use a manual screwdriver to tighten the screws. Do not over-tighten the screws or you might strip the screws or warp the pet door frame.
3. Insert the finishing plugs in the screw holes of the interior and exterior frames. Align the flat edge of the plugs with the outer edges of the frame. The plugs will only fit in the frame in one direction.
4. You can caulk around the exterior frame and between the tunnels where they meet for improved weather resistance. This is optional.
5. Plug the power adaptor into the connector underneath the interior frame.
6. Keep the cord out of the path of foot traffic to avoid tripping.

The Passport™ Pet Door fits in most standard doors and walls 2.5 - 5 cm thick. You can purchase the Passport™ Wall Entry Kit for walls or doors 9 cm - 30.5 cm thick. The Wall Entry Kit frames out the wall cut-out, giving your door installation a clean, smooth, finished look. You can purchase a Passport™ Wall Entry Kit online or from our Customer Care Centre (currently only available in Canada and Europe).

You can use the optional rechargeable lithium-ion battery as a backup in case of mains power loss or as the primary pet door power source (instead of the power adaptor).
 

Charging the Battery

For safety reasons, the lithium-ion battery is shipped not fully charged. Fully charge the battery before using it.

1. Connect the supplied power adaptor to the charging station and plug the adaptor into a standard outlet.
2. Insert the lithium-ion battery into the charging station with the battery contacts facing down.
3. The charging station LED light will remain illuminated with a red light until the battery is fully charged.
4. The red LED will turn off when the battery is fully charged. After the battery is fully charged, unplug the power adaptor and disconnect it from the charging station. Remove the battery.
    

Installing the Battery

The Passport™ Rechargeable Battery fits it in the battery compartment on the right side of the interior frame.

1. Open the battery compartment cover. With the battery contacts pointed up and the arrow on the battery pointed down, insert the bottom of the battery into the battery compartment.
2. Using the battery grips, push the battery down to compress the spring in the bottom of the battery compartment and push in the top of the battery.
3. Release the grips until the arrow on the battery and the arrow inside the battery compartment are aligned.
4. Close the battery cover.
    

Removing the Battery

1. Open the battery compartment door. Use the battery grips and push the battery down to compress the spring in the bottom of the battery compartment.
2. While pushing down, pull out the top of the battery from the compartment, then pull out the bottom of the battery to completely remove it.

If you don't hear 3 beeps after trying to program your Passport™ Key or microchip or the pet door gives you a message that says programming was unsuccessful, try the following troubleshooting steps.

• Program only 1 pet at a time. Any other keys or microchips near the pet door will prevent proper programming.
• When you press Enter to accept the date and start programming your pet, don't hold the Passport™ Key in your hand against the LCD screen.
• During programming, hold the key or microchip 12-15 cm from the centre of the flap, about two hands’ length away from the pet door.
• Remove household appliances and electronic devices that might interfere with the programming.
• Move the pet door and try programming the pet again in another location away from possible interference.
• Contact Customer Care for additional help. We don't recommend installing your pet door if your pet isn't successfully programmed.

If the door has an ongoing problem or if you have issues after turning off your door, you might need to reset your door. The reset button reboots your door while keeping your programmed settings.

The Reset Button is the small, pin-sized button located on the control panel above the USB connection. Use a small push pin or paper clip to push the Reset Button, then release it. After your door reboots, the startup screen will appear and then return to Main Menu.

When powered by the optional Passport™ Rechargeable Battery, Low Battery Mode lets you choose to set the door to open or locked when the battery charge runs low and shuts down. You can also set an optional audible alert to notify you when the battery is low. The default factory setting is off for the beep alert and locked for the flap if the battery shuts down.

When the Passport™ Pet Door enters Low Battery Mode, “ATTENTION” will appear on the LCD screen, and the LED light will blink red twice every 6 seconds.

The wireless card for the Passport™ Pet Door will let you connect your pet door to your computer or smart device for remote programming. We apologize for the delay in releasing this product and hope to have it available soon.

• If your power adaptor has an LED, check if the light on the power adaptor is illuminated to ensure the adaptor is receiving power from the outlet.
• Make sure the power adaptor connector is fully inserted in the connection on the charging station.
• Plug the power adaptor into another outlet to ensure the outlet is working properly.
• Try another power adaptor if you have one. Your Passport™ Pet Door uses the same power adaptor as the battery charging station.

• Check to make sure the Passport™ Rechargeable Battery is not upside down in the charging station. The battery end with the contacts should be inserted into the charging station.
• Make sure the battery is fully seated and making good contact with the charging station by firmly pressing the battery and slightly moving it from side to side.
• Remove the battery from the charging station. Disconnect the power adaptor from charging station. Wait 5 seconds then reconnect the battery. Reinsert the battery into the charging station.
• Make sure the battery is not too cold, below 0°C, or too hot, above 60°C. If the battery is too cold or too hot, leave the battery at normal room temperature for an hour, then try charging it again.
• Make sure you’re using the right power adaptor.
• Try another power adaptor if you have one. Your Passport™ Door uses the same power adaptor as the battery charging station.
• Try another battery in the charging station if you have an extra one.

The pet door has been designed to stand up to the toughest pets, with up to 45 kg of push-through strength. Because of the way our electronic pet doors are designed, flaps aren't available separately and can't be replaced. In the unlikely event that your flap breaks, you will need to purchase and install a new pet door. We apologize for any inconvenience.
